The Upside To Being Single – 4 Sweet & Sassy Stars

I just love to read RomComs…but honestly, so many are just not as funny as the authors producing them portray when hyping their lastest and greatest. I mean, what’s not to love about them right?  You get the sweet and sexxy moments associated with a Romance with the added benefit of Laughter. The Upside To being Single is Emma Hart at her Snarky, Sacrastic best!!! I pick up every Emma Hart book as it’s released because I love her witty and yet realistic romances. She always writes enjoyable books but let’s face it, sometimes you will laugh a little more with one book than you may with another. The Upside To Being Single had me laughing NONSTOP from the first page to the last.

Mellie is a twenty-something professional, enjoying her girls’ night out with her BFFs when they heckle her to flash her goods on Bourbon Street during Marti Gras. When promised a shot of fireball to go along with the obligatory beads?!? It’s really very simple…you flash your tatas! Of course, her first mistake is taking on the dare to start. Her Second? Allowing her best girls to complete the sentence “you’ll never see them again” because anytime a sentence contains never, you’re surely screwed!!! In this case, not two days later, MR. TDS from the balcony walks in to the hotel she manages as the new owner. Jake has never met anyone who is as much of a hot mess as Mellie, but he can’t deny she hot and is extremely interest in her on a personal level. Despite their current professional relationship. The nonstop, laugh out loud moments in The Upside To Being Single were well worth the extra late night I endured to finish reading this book in one sitting. (Fair Warning: my spouse did a fair amount of grumbling about the noise I was making while he tried to sleep!) Emma wrote predominately from Melli’s perspective but we did get a little of the story from Jake’s. I usually enjoy a true duel perspective more, but can’t imagine liking this book more than I already did. As with anything that Emma Hart puts out, this story was certainly well written with a great plot. Their were several typos and grammatical mistakes throughout the book that bothered me as a reader but those don’t bother everyone.

No joke, I also loved the characters in this book! The klutziness that Mellie exhibited whenever Jake came around was taken straight outta an excerpt from my own life. Emma Hart certainly made the two realistic, fun and believable…well, mostly. I mean, I am pretty sure any woman who eats dozens of donuts a day would have an ass the size of Montana. Otherwise, I loved how Jake made Mellie blush almost constantly and was constantly cracking jokes about her tatas. Then there was Mellie’s  sarcasm, which is totally top tier and the way she can keep a straight face while totally screwing with Jake!?PRICESLESS!!! Mellie and Jake have chemistry! their sparks and sweetness with one another showed me a slightly more realistic relationship than most romance novels. Another epic part of this book? The secondary Characters! Everyone needs friends like Peyton and Chloe. Their addition to this story is literally invaluable. I venture to guess that it will be for each and every person who reads it. I know as a blogger, I can be a tough critic and might have considered this a little flatter without these two additions. I think Emma’s genius as a writer is incorporating something like Peyton and Chloe – something that can be done do simply – which ultimately can make or break a story. The commonality and comradery between Mellie, Peyton and Chloe was just as awesome as the physical chemistry exhibited with Mellie and Jake. This trio is just PHENOMENAL together.

I had a few things I wished were different about The Upside of Being Single. First, I wish it was a longer book. It was so enjoyable, I wasn’t read for the end. It came a little abruptly for me. I am not sure that many would agree with me, but I felt that I would have loved “more”. Now that said, more of what I can’t necessarily say. I wasn’t the author and I am not sure what she has planned for the books mentioned at the end for Peyton and Chloe. The other thing I would have liked to see done differently is I would have loved more of the sexy times between Jake and Mellie. Not everyone reads a romance for these things, but I do! If I pick up a psychological thriller or a horror novel, I don’t expect much or any, but a romance should have romance.

Overall, I feel like this book was easily a 4 to a 4.5 star read! Again, I am a blogger and editor, so I tend to be a little more critical than most and for that reason, I hope you will ignore this review and just jump on reading the book yourself. You will enjoy it no matter what. Let’s face it, the difference between a 4, a 4.5 and a 5 star review is really minuet!!!
