The Sounds of Secrets – 5 + Stars
This book was SENSATIONAL! The Sounds of Secrets by Whitney Barbetti was absolutely, positively an exceptional story deserving far more then a simple five stars. The Sounds of Secrets is one of the most emotionally charged books I have read in a while. I seem to have been on a streak of great books lately, and since I am an avid reader I am truly grateful to the authors I have come across in the indie community who are putting out such high quality work…
The Sounds of Secrets is heartbreaking and intense from the first chapter to the last. As a first time reader of Whitney Barbetti, I was astounded by the depth she went to in bringing readers into the mindset of Lotte, and later, with Sam. The story is duel perspective and I love this fact…although initially, we hear more of Lotte’s side of things then with Sam. That doesn’t last long and when Sam’s perspective is told, it’s almost stronger for the moments that Barbetti brings Sam’s innermost thoughts to light. There is this amazing connection between Lotte and Sam that I wasn’t prepared for with the reading of the blurb. Barbetti expertly wrote a blurb that was ambigious and elusive and I truly can tell you nothing without spoiling much of the book…Which I won’t do! I can give you a few quotes to show the depth Whitney Barbetti mastered that grabbed me and wouldn’t…couldn’t let me up for oxygen from start to finish with this amazing sorry:
“It amazed me that alcohol could numb me to my surroundings, to my own fear of being in his presence. But nothing, absolutely nothing, anesthetized me to the feel of Sam’s Lips pressing against mine.”
“From this mistake, in his words. God that word was among the worst in the English language. it would be forever colored by this moment, by the feel of my heart shattering in my chest.”
“…I’d learned that secrets could be loud, yelled in anger. They could be soft, whispered along someone’s skin as they slept. But the secrets that stayed silent, that were far too fragile to ever pass my lips: those secrets weren’t disposable.”
In no particular order so as not to give away the story, these words gripped my heart in the most beautiful and anguished way…I find great pleasure in a good cry, and while The Sounds of Secrets was not an ugly cry book for me, it certainly was a book that offered me a full range of emotions. From complete happiness to utter despair, overwhelming joy and crushing disappointment. I highly…HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I think it has something to offer in its uniqueness and high caliber of writing. But don’t take my word for it…Go out and buy it for yourself so that you too can see what I found so captivating.
