Fearless by Carly Phillips
My rating: 3.75 of 5 stars

I have been reading Carly Phillips books for years and have always enjoyed them. Fearless is the first book in Phillips new Rosewood Bay series and while not my favorite read to date, is still an enjoyable story. I feel like a synapsis of this one is a bit redundant on my behalf, so I will leave that out of my review. If you have read the blurb from goodreads or amazon (or any number of other reviews), you can be assured Phillips tells you the background you need to start reading this book. Phillips writes stories that the reader can just dive right into. You’ll be able to finish it in one setting and will agree that they are well written. Often sweet and swoony with some sizzle for us that find that important in a good romance. Fearless offered readers a slow burn, sizzling read that was lite in angst. The ‘drama’ as it were being a little predicable but that’s not something that I would decrease the rating for. Fearless was well paced and had an engaging plot that will appeal to a range of reading preferences.

Now, my overall review for this book may seem a little on the low side for some. As such, I feel like it’s important to note that I am a tough critic. I work in the book industry and am an extremely avid reader. Combining the two often leave me at odds with one another in terms of rating a book. I struggle with what I think others will agree with and/or how much a book speaks to me. That said, I refuse to pad reviews, regardless of who the author is to me. With Fearless, I struggled with a little more than I usually do in a book by Carly Phillips, and that’s why I chose to rate this one as a 3.75-star review instead of rating it higher. The book is one that didn’t speak to me as much as some of the books I have read in the past by this author. The heroine, Halley, was a recluse with a lot of unresolved feelings because of her upbringing. Halley’s character didn’t jive with me as authentic for a few reasons – but since I am not comfortable with posting spoilers, I will just state that I feel like she contradicted herself too much. I also felt like as cool as I found Kane, he was to complacent with walking away from Halley. If his feelings were as strong for her as he asserted, he would have fought a little harder to keep her. I still hope you will look to Carly Phillips work because she is a great author and you will enjoy any and all books she’s written. Like me, you will have to agree that not every book is a 5-star read, but still they are in no way a waste of your time!
