Broken Miles by Claire Kingsley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Broken Miles was a chance for me to branch out to a new-to-me-author. Of course, the blurb and cover art initially drew my attention, but it was the outstanding storytelling abilities on behave of Claire Kingsley that made this a true pleasure to read and review. This second chance romance introduces readers to a new series of books she will be releasing centered around the Miles family. In Broken Miles, Zoe and Roland Miles are forced back together when Roland returns to his family’s winery. Without Roland’s immediate intervention, his family is on the brink of losing everything. The only problem with returning home is being thrust back into near constant contact with his ex-wife…the woman who walked away from him seemingly without a second glance. Of course, nothing is what it seems and with one situation after another inundating the pair, they are left with no choice but to work together or see the family they both love fall apart at the seams.
Claire Kingsley’s Broken Miles was exceptionally well written. The storyline is written in the present tense. However, Kingsley introduces ingenuity and introspective into the story buy including text messages which express the pair’s feelings over they course of their dissolving relationship. These messages appear at the start of each chapter, which is both brilliant and strategic. They really speak to the couple’s present and past relationship as the near constant contact takes its toll on them as individuals. Also, these text messages serve as a great segue to the change of perspectives we get from Zoe to Roland. Claire also wrote very interesting characters. This goes for both the primary characters as well as the secondary characters. I am deeply interested in the evolution of this series now. I loved Roland. His emotions as they pertained to his divorce could have been both easily dismissed and/or worse misunderstood had Kingsley not introduced his direct POV. Zoe struggled significantly with reading Roland herself. So as the reader if we had not been given direct access to Roland, I feel like a lot of misunderstanding of Roland’s character would have been highly likely. Zoe was very easy to love as well. She was also easy to identify with and my heart broke along with hers repeatedly. As much as I loved Roland, I am not going to lie, his brothers Cooper and Leo both left me deeply enthralled. Claire cannot release their books soon enough for me…
Broken Miles definitely had its moments of angst, as one would expect with a second chance romance. However, it was very well assuaged with a wittiness that I appreciated greatly. Don’t let the humor misled you, it is not a rom-com. Readers truly will feel a wide range of emotions as they read Kingsley’s newest series. One last point in this excellent story’s favor was the chemistry between the characters – their chemistry fantastic and almost combustible. Broken Miles was a slow burn but scorching hot read. It’s more than worthy of a five-star review as you will no doubt agree after you read it…
